An IP phone, also called a SIP phone or VoIP phone, is a telephone that sends and receives calls as data over an IP network instead of a traditional analog line. It registers with an IP PBX, hosted PBX or cloud phone system using the SIP protocol and connects through an Ethernet port or built-in Wi-Fi. Because it is a network device, an IP phone can be powered over PoE, provisioned and updated remotely, and can register several SIP accounts at once.
Desk IP phones suit offices, reception and call-handling roles; in this range they are the GRP and GXP series. Wi-Fi cordless IP phones such as the WP series suit warehouses, hospitals and retail floors. Hotel IP phones such as the GHP series are built for guest rooms. IP video phones add a camera and larger touchscreen — see the Grandstream IP video phones. Extension modules add busy-lamp-field keys for receptionists and operators.
An analog phone connects to a PSTN line or PBX extension port. An IP phone connects to your data network, so it needs an IP PBX or cloud phone system and offers HD audio, multiple lines and central management. Existing analog phones can still join an IP system through an ATA or VoIP gateway.
VoIP is the technology, SIP is the protocol most IP phones use to register and place calls, and the IP phone is the device. A SIP phone is simply an IP phone that supports SIP, so the three terms are often used interchangeably.
You need a phone system to register with, such as an IP PBX or UC platform, and a reliable local network. A PoE switch powers each phone over the same cable as data; Wi-Fi models also need good wireless coverage. Not sure which phones fit your setup? Talk to our specialists.

Grandstream is one of the world's most widely deployed manufacturers of SIP voice endpoints, with more than 20 years of experience building IP phones for enterprises, service providers and hospitality. Its IP Voice Telephony portfolio spans the carrier-grade GRP series, the enterprise GXP series, WP Wi-Fi cordless phones, GHP hotel phones and extension modules — giving organisations a single, interoperable platform that scales from a two-line reception phone to a 14-line executive desk.
Every model delivers full-duplex HD audio, broad SIP interoperability and free cloud management through Grandstream's Device Management System (GDMS), which lets IT teams provision, monitor and update thousands of devices in true zero-touch fashion. From the entry-level GRP2601P, GRP2602P and GXP1610 right up to the GRP2670 with its 7″ capacitive touchscreen or the Android-powered WP856 Wi-Fi smartphone, there is a Grandstream phone engineered for every role and deployment size.
Start with how many lines and SIP accounts each user needs. Reception and basic desks are well served by 2-line essential IP phones such as the GRP2601P, or the GRP2602P when four SIP accounts are needed. Managers and power users benefit from colour-screen GRP Professional or GXP2100 models with more line keys, Bluetooth and USB. Operators and receptionists who monitor many extensions should pair a phone with a GBX20 or GXP2200EXT module, while staff who move around a site need WP Wi-Fi cordless IP phones.
Next, check your network: choose PoE models to run power and data over one cable, and Gigabit models such as the GRP2602G, GRP2603 or GXP2170 if a PC shares the phone's network port on a Gigabit LAN.
Whether you are equipping a corporate headquarters with high-end GXP and professional GRP phones, a hotel with the purpose-built GHP hospitality range, a warehouse or hospital with rugged WP Wi-Fi handsets, or a call centre with GBX20 / GXP2200EXT busy-lamp-field expansion modules, Grandstream has a fit.
